Set aside the clamor of daily life to refresh yourself in the serenity of the
tearoom dedicated to the pursuit of art and beauty. Attendees will
participate in a Japanese tea ceremony and learn to navigate the role of
guest while enjoying a frothy bowl of whipped powdered green tea and
a seasonal Kyoto-style sweet. A discussion of the purpose, cultural
context, and contemporary relevance of this influential 400-year-old art
form will be supplemented by a Q&A session at the conclusion of the
ceremony.
Dress is kimono or business attire and (bring a clean pair of white socks
to wear in the tearoom). Jewelry, especially rings and watches, are not
worn, nor are noticeable scents. Guests should be prepared to enjoy tea
in the kneeling (seiza) position.

Zuishian tearoom is conveniently located in a townhouse in Seattle's
Hawthorne Hills neighborhood just north and east of the University of
Washington. The interior has been modified for Chanoyu classes with the
installation of two tearooms, a small 4.5 tatami-mat room and large 8
tatami-mat room.
