OKEIKO DIALOG
Opening salutations (goaisatsu), entire class:
"Ohayo gozaimasu [good morning], konnichi wa [good day], or konban wa [good
evening], okeiko yoroshiku onegai itashimasu." (Please instruct us.)
Closing salutations (goaisatsu), entire class:
"Sensei, okeiko arigatou gozaimashita." (Thank you for the lesson.)
Taking the role of host:
To the teacher :
"Sensei, Ryakubon-temae [name the temae] no okeiko onegai itashimasu."
(Please teach me Ryakubon temae.)
To the guest:
"Okyaku-sama onegai itashimasu." (Please be my guest.)
Inviting the guest to take a sweet:
"Okashi o dozo." (Please have your sweet.)
Responding to the guest's request to close :
"Oshimai itashimasu." (I will close in accordance with your request.)
Thanking the teacher:
Sensei, ____[insert name of temae] temae no okeiko arigatou gozaimashita."
(Thank you for the ____temae lesson)
Thanking the guest:
"Okyakusama arigatou gozaimashita." (Thank you for being my guest(s))
Taking the role of guest:
To the host, after being invited to be the guest:
"Yoroshiku onegai itashimasu."
To the teacher before being invited to be the guest by the host:
"Sensei, kyaku no okeiko yoroshiku onegai itashimasu." (Please instruct me in
the roll of the guest.)
When the host invites you to take your sweet:
"Okashi wo chodai itashimasu." (I will partake of the sweet.)
When you bring the bowl back to your seat:
To the guest on your right who has already had tea:
"Oshoban itashimasu." (I will join you.)
To the guest to your left:
"Osakini." (Excuse me for going first.)
To the host:
"Otemae chodai itashimasu." (I gratefully partake of the tea you have prepared.)
To stop the host from making more tea (spoken as the host empties the rinse
water into the kensui):
"Oshimai kudasai." (Please conclude.)
To the teacher at the conclusion of the temae:
"Sensei, kyaku no okeiko arigatou gozaimashita." (Thank you for instructing me
in the roll of the guest.)
