Opening salutation (aisatsu), entire class:
おはよう御座います。（こんにちは，こんばんは）御稽古宜しくお願いいたします。
Ohayo gozaimasu (or konnichi wa, konban wa) okeiko yoroshiku onegai
itashimasu. Good morning (good day or good evening), please instruct us.
Closing salutation (aisatsu), entire class:
先生御稽古どうも有難うございました。Sensei, okeiko doumo arigatou
gozaimashita. Sensei, thank you for the lesson.
REQUEST FOR INSTRUCTION/PARTICIPATION BEFORE TEMAE
Host requests instruction from the teacher:
先生薄茶平手前の御稽古お願いいたします。Sensei, Usucha Hirademae no okeiko
onegai itashimasu. Sensei, please teach me [such and such] temae.
Shokyaku (first guest) requests instruction from the teacher:
先生、客の御稽古お願いいたします。Sensei kyaku no okeiko onegai itashimasu.
Sensei please teach me in the role of guest.
Teishu (host) request to guest:
御客様、お願いいたします。Okyakusama onegai itashimasu. Please be my guest.
Shokyaku response to teishu:
宜しくお願いいたします。Yoroshiku onegai itashimasu. With pleasure.
INSTRUCTION/PARTICIPATION THANKS AFTER TEMAE
Teishu thanks teacher for instruction:
先生薄茶平手前の御稽古を有難う御座いました。Sensei, Usucha hirademae no

RYAKUBON AND USUCHA DIALOG
Teishu at the sadoguchi (tearoom entrance):
一服さし上げます。Ippuku sashiagemasu. I would like to offer you (literally one
dose of) tea.
Teishu invites the guest to take a sweet:
どうぞお菓子を。お菓子をどうぞ。Douzo okashi wo. or, okashi wo douzo. Please
enjoy (or partake of) the sweets now.
Guest replies:
お菓子を頂戴いたします。Okashi wo chodai itashimasu. I will partake of this sweet.
Or the guest may initiate:
早めに、お菓子を頂戴いたします。Hayame ni okashi wo chodai itashimasu. Please
allow me to partake of the sweets.
Teishu replies:
どうぞ。Douzo. Please go ahead.
Shokyaku to jikyaku (second guest):
お先に. Osaki ni. Please allow me to proceed.
Jikyaku replies:
どうぞ。Douzo. Please go ahead.
Shokyaku returns to seat with the bowl of tea-- to jikyaku:
お先に. Osakini. Please allow me to proceed.
Jikyaku replies:
どうぞ。Douzo. Please go ahead.
Shokyaku to teishu:
お手前頂戴いたします。Otemae chodai itashimasu. Thank you for the tea.
Teishu replies:
どうぞ。Douzo. Please go ahead.
Jikyaku returns to seat with the bowl of tea, to the first guest:
お相伴いたします。Oshoban itashimasu. May I join you?
Shokyaku replies:
どうぞ。Douzo. Please go ahead.
Jikyaku to sankyaku ( third guest):
お先に。Osakini. Please allow me to proceed.
Sankyaku replies:
どうぞ。Douzo. Please go ahead.
Jikyaku to teishu:
お手前頂戴いたします。Otemae chodai itashimasu. Thank you for the tea.
Teishu replies:
どうぞ。Douzo. Please go ahead.
Shokyaku to renkyaku (other guests):
もう一服いかがですか。Mo ippuku ikaga desuka. Would you like another bowl of
tea?
Renkyaku reply:
もう結構でございます。Mou kekko degozaimasu. Thank you we are most satisfied.
Shokyaku to teishu:
どうぞ、お終い下さい。Douzo oshimai kudasai. Please conclude.
Teishu replies:
それでは，お終い（に）いたします。Sore dewa, oshimai (ni) itashimasu. In
accordance I will close.
Shokyaku to teishu:
どうぞ 御棗、御茶杓の拝見を。Douzo onatsume ochashaku no haiken wo. May
we please look more closely at the natsume and chashaku?
Shokyaku to teishu:
御棗の御形は. Onatsume no okatachi wa? What is the shape of the tea caddy?
Teishu replies: 利休形中棗で御座います。Rikyuu gata chuu natsume de
gozaimasu. This is a medium size jujube-shaped container favored by Rikyuu.
Shokyaku to teishu:
御茶杓の御作は。Ochashaku no osaku wa? Who carved the chashaku?
Teishu replies:
座忘斎御家元で御座います。Zabohsai oiemoto de goziamasu. It was carved by the
16th generation grand tea master, Zabobsai. (Hohunsai Daisosho is the 15th,
Tantansai is the 14th, Ennousai is the 13th, Gengensai is the 11th, etc. Note,
only the current grand tea master is referred to as Oiemoto.
Shokyaku to teishu:
御茶杓の御名は。Ochashaku no gomei wa? What is its poetic name?
Teishu replies:
和敬で御座います。Wakei degozaimasu. Harmony and respect.

Teishu to Shokyaku:
本日はようこそお出で下さいまして有難うございます。Honjitsu wa yokoso oide
kudasaimashite arigatougozaimasu. Thank you for honoring us by attending today’
s celebration/observation.
Younger Teishu to Shokyaku:
今日はお出で下さいまして有り難う御座います。
今日はいらしてくださいまして 有り難う御座います。Kyo wa oide kudasaimashite
arigatou gozaimasu. Or more feminine: Kyo wa irasshite kudasaimashite arigatou
gozaimasu. Thank you for honoring us by attending today’s chakai, celebration or
observation.
Shokyaku:
今日はお招き下さいまして有り難う御座います。Kyo wa omaneki kudasaimashite
arigatou gozaimasu. Thank you for the invitation to today’s chakai, celebration or
observation.
Teishu to other guests:
皆様本日はようこそお出で下さいました。Minnasama honjitsu wa yokoso oide
kudasaimashita. Thank you all for joining us today.
Shokyaku:
ところで，本日の御軸のお読みあげを。Tokorode honjitsu no ojiku no oyomi age
wo.
Thank you for displaying the scroll would you read it for us?
Teishu:
この軸は鵬雲斎大宗匠の御染筆で「和敬清寂」と書いてあります。Kono jiku wa
Hounsai Daisosho no gosenpitsu de “Wa Kei Sei Jaku” to kaite arimasu. The scroll
was brushed by Hounsai Daisosho. It reads “Harmony, Respect, Purity and
Tranquility.”
Shokyaku:
見事な筆で御座いますね。Migotona fude de gozaimasu ne. The brush stroke is
exquisite.
Shokyaku:
それでは御香合の御形は、御窯元は。Soredewa okougo no okatachi wa? Please
describe the shape of the incense container. Okamamoto wa? What is the
ceramic ware?
Shokyaku:
御床の花がとても詫びた風情で御座いますが。Otoko no hana ga totemo “wabita”
fuzei de gozaimasu ga. The flower in the alcove has a “wabi” charm.
(“sugasugashii/refreshing” or “hanayakana/festive”)
Shokyaku:
枝のものは、何の御花でしょうか。Eda no mono wa nanno ohana deshou ka?
What is the branch material?
Teishu:
万作で御座います。白玉に合わせました。Manzaku de gozaimasu. Shiratama ni
awasemashita. The branch is witch hazel and is combined with a white camellia
japonica.
Shokyaku:
御花入のお作は。 Ohanaire no osaku wa? Who made the flower vase?
Teishu:
利休形一重切り竹花入で、西川梅元作で御座います。Rikyugata ichijyu giri take
hanaire de, Nishikawa Baigen saku degozaimasu. The vase is a one-cut bamboo
style favored by Rikyu. It was carved by the Kyoto craftsman Nishikawa Baigen.
Shokyaku:
御花と花入がよく写りますね。Ohana to hanaire ga yoku utsurimasu ne. The
flowers and vase are lovely together.
Teishu:
有り難う御座いました。Arigatou gozaimashita. Thank you very much.
それでは一服さし上げます。Sore dewa ippuku sashiagemasu. At this time we
would like to serve you tea.
OKEIKO SALUTATIONS
